  Around 7:30 a.m.

  WHEN SHE RETURNS from a long run she finds her neighbours standing almost naked in the compound. Men in morose Y-fr
ont underwear, women crouched behind parked cars or hidden inside rings formed by other women who are not bare. Through the gaps in the cordons she sees flashes of naked thighs, waists, backs. It is Friday but that does not explain anything.

  Akhila, in damp shorts and vests and a blue bandana, does not stop to find out what has happened. She is confident of solving the puzzle any moment. Everything that happens in Mumbai has happened before. She walks across the concrete driveway towards Beach Towers even though the behaviour of the residents should have warned her against entering the twenty-storey building.

  The possibility of death does not occur to her. It never does. If she is ever in an air crash, she knows, she would be that lone miraculous survivor. She might even save a child. It is not hope, which is merely a conversation with the self. Hope is a premonition of defeat. She knew that even as a little girl who used to wait for her mother to return, wait for days, for weeks. Optimism, on the other hand, is psychosis. Its victims alone know how cheerfully the disease takes them to doom. She has tried but is unable to have complete faith in the view that she will die one day. Science will find a way to make her immortal.

  People find immortality amusing because they do not believe they deserve it. Like a gorgeous spouse. But death is merely a technology of the universe, and a time comes, doesn’t it, when a science becomes obsolete.

  Apart from immortality she has no grand suspicions about her life. It will be filled with friends, solitary sometimes, and beautiful, of course, as it is for people who run long distances. There might even be greatness at some point, but she is not very clear about the details.

  She sprints up the stairs to the ninth floor as she usually does. She is still on the first flight of stairs when she hears the lift doors open. It should have been an unremarkable event, but this morning the doors have a loud clear voice and there are echoes. Echoes are rare in Mumbai.

  From the lift emerges a tiny ancient woman with a mild hunch, her forearms splayed, holding in each hand a pressed kurta folded on a hanger. The old woman, in a lovely cotton sari, moves at an excruciating pace but manages to get out of the lift a moment before the closing doors can crush her. And she appears to know where she is going with the two hangers. Akhila follows her but it is hard to stay behind; the woman is too slow. It is as though she is lampooning the senior, which is not beyond her, actually. She watches the old woman walk out into the driveway, towards a ring of women guarding the nudes. There, a man has begun to undress, looking valiant in his late decision. He flings his shirt first, then his trousers into the ring of women.

  Akhila turns back and runs up the stairs in the unfamiliar silence of vacant homes. The stairway is littered with objects, which is unusual. There are pieces of clothing, eerie dolls, one daft Nokia that surely belongs to a maid, even food. There are footwear, and a streak of blood too. So much happens when people flee.

  At home, she does the usual stretches on the balcony, watching the Arabian Sea. The sky is a clear blue. Far away a giant cruise ship sails across the bay, like a beautiful novel about nothing. A hectic breeze arrives. The winding bridge over the sea stands like a marvel. Her father hates that bridge. He complains about it every day to her, but she is spared this morning because he is not in town. Something about majestic cable-stayed bridges across shallow seas remind Marxists that they have lost to capitalism and human nature.

  She walks to the kitchen, checking her phone, but there are messages that make her stop. They ask if she is alright. Several messages uniformly ask the question, ‘Did you feel it?’ When she sees the Twitter feed she figures that about half an hour ago there were tremors. That explains the neighbours. But the thought of fleeing the building still does not occur to her.

  The tremors were mild, but an eighty-year-old, condemned building in Prabhadevi has collapsed. She is drawn to the images of the fallen building. She knows the place, it is not far. There are people still trapped in its debris.

  In minutes, she is sprinting down, her spiral curls flailing. She has showered and changed into jeans and a T-shirt that has no message at all to convey.

  She runs out of Beach Towers, through a mob of neighbours who are beginning to feel foolish. ‘She even had a bath,’ a woman mutters.

  Akhila wonders why they had not stopped her from going up. They may not like her, or they probably thought she knew what she was doing, but still they should have tried to stop her. She likes the idea of a village of people, even if they are nude, asking her to be one of them.

  A Patriarch’s Review

  SHE DOES NOT offend him. To be infuriated by a young woman is to accept that the world is an unfamiliar place. But he cannot assure her that the other patriots, the young especially, who are performing their morning drills outside on the bald grounds of the shakha, marching, kicking, screaming, swinging their sticks and swords, have such a view of life. They are susceptible to offence.

  The bachelors look serious in the sacred attire – the tilted black cap, white shirt, sleeves folded at the elbows, large billowing khaki shorts with pleats. Just the sight of Hindu patriots this way in the uniform of the Sangh reminds Muslims of death, and infuriates the refined cultural orphans who have been retarded by English. Even to Professor Vaid’s old eyes they look intimidating. That is the idea. Hinduism without fear and wound is probably called Buddhism.

  Vaid, too, is in uniform. So is the young patriot on whose arms the laptop rests. The girl in the computer, too, but she is wearing red shoes that have long pointed heels. No one has ever seen a woman in these clothes. Her name, she says, is Akhila Iyer. The young patriot finally places the laptop on the desk, which the excessively pious simpleton should have done much earlier. The problem with reverence in this country is that some people convert it into a folk dance.

  In Miss Iyer’s film, which has gone viral after it was uploaded last night, she stands against a dark background and talks to an unseen audience. She pulls at the hems of her enormous shorts and says, in English, ‘The most dangerous men in my country wear divided skirts.’

  There is no such thing as courage. There is gamble, yes. And there is ignorance. Miss Iyer probably imagines violence as a journalistic event, something that happens in another place to another kind of people. Many make that mistake. Their corpses, they look so surprised. Bewildered corpses that wear one footwear on one lifeless foot, he has seen them many times. He has never understood the asymmetries of the dead. Where does the other shoe go?

  Miss Iyer has large eyes set in a clever Aryan face, her wiry hair dense and wild. She is probably not even twenty-five, she is at least five decades younger than him. A long-forgotten thought comes to him, that there is something precarious about the life of an attractive woman.

  In her film, which is called White Beard, Miss Akhila Iyer claims that she is the first woman ever to be granted admission to the Sangh. She says she had sent her milkman to pay twenty rupees at the local shakha and bought a membership. She waves the receipt in the air. ‘There must be a more proper way for a lady to join Hindu nationalism,’ she says. ‘It’s the twenty-first century, guys, why can’t they let women join the gang? I tell you I totally qualify. A) I am unmarried. B) There is a badass cultural guardian in me. C) For the past several weeks I’ve been celibate too.’

  ‘What is the meaning of badass?’ Vaid asks.

  There is silence in the room. The boys probably imagine that a man of his stature should not be told. Or, maybe they do not know the meaning. Nashik is a small town.

  Miss Iyer says, ‘I kind of like being an Indian Nazi.’ And she gives a Nazi salute, which is a deliberate misrepresentation. The Hindu patriots were, of course, inspired by the Nazis but they have their own salute, which she now does correctly.

  The camera is still and never shows her audience, but they surely exist in the darkened room, which is probably a bar. From the laughter, which is occasional, and her gaze that sweeps but does not rise above a certain degree, he presumes her audience is small. Also,
it would be impossible for her to perform the act in front of more than a hundred people. Beyond that many people, anywhere in the nation, there would be at least two nationalists who would be seriously enraged and one of them would be rich enough to afford to fling a shoe at her.

  She says that she is going to tell a story. ‘Stories are all we have,’ she says. ‘Everything we believe in. Everything we think about. They are stories, they come from stories. Then there is masturbation. We love it not only because it is about sex. Masturbation is, primarily, a story.’

  Surely, she speaks for women alone?

  It is not clear at this point why she needs to be in the costume of the Sangh. She is probably coming to that, she is setting up a joke, perhaps about the sex lives of the patriots. Any moment now she might say something about their secret homosexuality. That would be another old lazy joke. He throws a glance at the steady stream of patriots trickling into his office after the morning drill, their thin legs hairy, bare thighs paltry, some paunches so enormous that they stun the belt buckles. Only women would agree to sleep with them.

  On the sleek television that is mounted on the saffron wall, studio analysts have started their chat, but the volume is on mute. Soon the Election Commission will begin declaring the results. The ejaculations of the Nehru–Gandhi dynasty will be flushed, and the suave imitators of the West will be shown their place as mere foreigners in their own land. The political masquerade of the Sangh will triumph. The controls of the ancient nation will pass from dynasty to monastery.

  ‘In Fifty Shades of Grey,’ says Miss Iyer, and waits for the giggles to dissolve. ‘In Fifty Shades of Grey, a telecom billionaire spanks a humanities student who believes that the internet has to be fair and free.’ Miss Iyer takes a slow sip of water from a small bottle that she is holding. ‘He has a written contract for her to sign, which would give him the right to spank her. She asks two important questions. Can she, too, spank him? He says, “No.” She does not press. And she asks, despite her suspicion that she might enjoy the spanking, as some of you do, what she would get in return for being spanked. The billionaire says, “Me.” This, we know, is the treaty in all loyal relationships where the whips and chains may not usually appear to be whips and chains. Men and women let themselves be bound, held in captivity and abused to a permissible degree on the promise that in return they would get the other.’
